Augustus became very sick about 1910 and his sons had to work to support the family.

From the record

Augustus had 10 children, 5 of whom died when they were young. The 8-year gap between Augustino (b. 1894) and Victor (b. 1902) suggests that several children died young in this period.

From the record

Augustus went to work at an early age as a labourer at Enmore sugar estate. He planted sugar cane and was part of the cane cutting and loading group at harvest time.
